Name, symbolism, context of the era

The Jahanara Dove earrings pay homage to Jahanara Begum – the beloved daughter of Emperor Shah Jahan, a patron of the arts who financed the Shalimar Gardens and the famous bazaars in Agra and Delhi. In her court, the bird motif was an allegory for the soul striving for freedom; the ruby and pearl symbolized the royal splendor and spiritual purity with which the princess surrounded herself. Drawing from the aesthetics of the Mughal palaces, the form of the dove recalls the ornaments that Jahanara offered to Sufi temples – a sign of peace between earth and heaven.

    Symbolism of elements and stones

The mother-of-pearl in the heart of the bird symbolizes purity of intention and feminine intuition, and its subtle glow was associated with divine protection. The red glazed plates reflect royal majesty and courage of the heart – the colour most often chosen by the rulers of Rajasthan. Small crystals in the wings attract light, giving the earrings lightness and movement, which in Indian culture represent joy of life.

    Handmade process

First, we cast the bird's body from gilded brass and carefully smooth the surface. Then the goldsmith manually fills the cells of the wings with coloured glass, firing them in a kiln to obtain a uniform, ruby shine. Finally, he sets a mother-of-pearl disc and small pearl, after which the whole thing is polished to a high shine to maintain fidelity to the ancient kundan craftsmanship.
